Why the Cane Corso

Ti amavo prima di conoscerti. Come ho imparato, mi amavi altrettanto. Quel giorno siamo diventati amici.

Titus and his mom, Kip. Titus has his first babies with Kelsi, born 6/5/24. They are impressive and will proudly represent the bloodline and ancestry of the beloved Cane Corso.

Thank you for taking the time to visit, and learn more about this magical breed. Translated from above:

I loved you before I knew you. As I got to learn you, you loved me just as much. That day, we became friends. Friendship grew to respect, and respect grew to loyalty. God said, -let there be babies-, and babies there were. Many lives were changed and the stories are so similar. "I thought I was getting a puppy, not a mind reader". It is in my heart to hear the same words from all of my future Corso families. -CC Farms, Deon Buhrman

Kash came to me in 2019. Like everyone else, I was just adding a friend to the family. I was going through a tough time. I knew nothing about the breed, but had trained what feels like every personality type of canine. I grew up a little wild cowgirl aback a dominant bay, fearlessly. I probably did 4 minutes of research and was in the car to go get a puppy. I train animals without the book; seat of my pants and lots of experience. I do not litter train that way. Puppy Training Camp Up to then my technique was to only “put the paddle in the water” if the canoe is headed to the trees. I raised my children this way as well. So the journey began. It wasn’t until he was about 1 that I realized he was staring at me. I was at my desk and looked down, “what?”.. still staring. That was my nudge to start testing his mind and see what he was up to. Within days I was convinced he could understand sentences. That took some testing, but sure enough, to this day there are very few one word commands. He knows 4 languages. I will not leash him, regardless of restaurant, barn, people here, dogs there..never. When he passed obedience training at age 2, he’s tethered by his own decisions based on the situation and environment.

I do NOT push animals until their brains are developed. I don’t push exercise until their musculoskeletal system is sound. You may be asking, “so you just let them run wild until they are 1 and 2. Kinda. They learn their position, manners, routines etc. I do NOT socialize a protector. Why do I want him to think all people are safe.

I get furious over the literature. I swear half of these idiots copy training techniques from a Labrador page. When you research the Cane Corso, more idiots say they are not service dogs. WHAT. I can confidently say that if EVERY family had a Corso it would put the surveillance industry out of business. The Corso leads off loyalty and protective DNA. If I’m ok, they are ok. When I’m gone, nothing is ok. Come on the land after my livestock, if the dogs don’t get to you the bull will. THE ONLY training I did was positioning and recall. Multiple languages came later.

Kip came along “out of nowhere” just like Kash. God had a plan and I had NO clue. Followed the same training with her, but she quickly fell in line behind him. That had me with a Great Dane, French bulldog, Staffordshire Terrier and Jo the American Bulldog. The Staff, Cam, and Jo were my 2008 “band of brothers”. Each of my children wanted their own and so we were with 5, Kip made 6. I quickly realized by societal response that a single woman, raising 2 children, 6 dogs was puzzling. I then realized, still to this day, that no one pack trains. Everyone has their rank, their position and their job. I just run the show.

Bring us to 2021, moved from the city and took on a house on 5 acres. I stress that because, there was NO fencing, no structures, nothing. Why people buy land to just mow it, is beyond me. At any rate I had to contain the hounds. This is when the training I had done, came in handy. I’m always willing to visit about your situations and offer tips and tricks on the fly as you live them.

The first litter of Kip/Kash hit in 2022. Here we are. I have been asked about puppy training. I am tossing around 2 options. ALL focused on 8 week to 12 week old pups. Ya’ll are taught to pick out your puppy at 8 weeks. You know by who? Breeders. Why? Get their money and get them gone. 8-12 weeks is CRITICAL training time to stay with the pack. But there comes along problem #2; most don’t raise their pups freely WITH THE PACK. They are weaned and kenneled. PACK TRAINING IS NOT, just letting the litter learn from each other. It’s letting the pack teach the litter. So, my offering would be 2 weeks here, or a month here. They would be exposed to the pack, other pups, routines, training, naptimes, playtimes, feeding times and free play. By 8 weeks my pups are running with the “bigs”, unattended. I know this will upset folks who silently agree, that an 8 week old pup is wildly underdeveloped psychologically, emotionally, physcially… they are babies that just aren’t nursing and thrust into a world with ONLY instincts to carry them safely. So many things can scar protective breeds, and you as new owner, have no clue. Unless you are a canine behavior expert (Behaviorist), which carries a license, there is no way you can know.

So I ask you, how do you pick who to “buy” from? Before you read this, I am sure your matrix for decision-making was a little different. I love what I do. Why? Each litter gets smarter, why. Because I learned a system from delivery to delivery (when they go home). Pups are truly ready for the world when they meet you. Potty trained, EXPOSED (not socialized), physically and mentally SOUND.

If you are serious about a GREAT Cane, you will never be disappointed with my “kids”.
